The Rizal Law

Republic Act No. 1425

An act to include in the curricula of all public and private schools, colleges, and universities courses on the life, works and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibustirismo, authorizing the printing and distribution thereof, and for other purposes.

Published in the Official Gazette, Vol. 52, No. 6, p. 2971 in June 1956.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To re-dedicate the ideal of freedom and nationalism for which our heroes lived and died;
  • To honor the national hero and patriot, Jose Rizal, we remember with special fondness & devotion their lives and works that have shaped the national character;
  • To serves as a constant and inspiring source of patriotism with which the mind of the youth should be suffused; 
  • And to develop moral character, personal discipline, civic conscience and to teach duties of citizenship.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF SCHOOL:

  • Courses of life, works, and writing of Jose Rizal shall be included in the curricula of all school, colleges and universities, public or private; 
  • The original or unexpurgated editions of his novels or their English translation shall be used as basic text; 
  • It is obligated to keep in their libraries an adequate number of copies of his novels, as well as his other works and biography, and shall be included in the list of approved books for required reading in all public or private schools, colleges and universities.

    RESPONSIBILITIES OF NATIONAL EDUCATION:

    • Authorized & directed to adopt forthwith measures to implement and carry out the provision of Sec.1, including the writing & printing of appropriate primers, reader, and textbooks.
    • Shall promulgate rules & regulations providing the exemption of students for reasons of religious beliefs.

    • Shall cause the translation of Rizal's novels and works into English, Tagalog, and other Philippine dialects.
    • Provide printed copies in cheap and popular editions, & cause them to be distributed throughout the country.
    IMPORTANCE:

    • Recognize the significance of our National Hero's ideals & teachings in relation to present conditions and situations in the society. 
    • Encourage the application of these ideals in current social and personal issues that can inspire and develop our character and patriotism. 
    • Develop an appreciation and deeper understanding of all that Rizal fought and died for.
